Lab Grown Diamond FAQ
Lab Grown Diamond FAQ
What is a lab grown diamond?
A lab grown diamond is grown, not mined — the same carbon, arranged into the same crystal structure, using equipment that recreates the pressure and heat conditions a diamond would otherwise take millions of years to form under. It isn't a substitute or a look-alike. Chemically, physically and optically, it's diamond, full stop — the only difference is where and how it formed.
Is a lab grown diamond as good as a mined one?
Yes. A lab grown diamond scores 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, exactly like a mined stone, and shows the same brilliance, fire and durability. Quality within either category still varies — a lab grown diamond can be graded anywhere from exceptional to poor, same as a mined one — which is exactly why grading matters more than origin.
How do I know if a lab grown diamond is genuinely good quality?
Check the same four things a gemologist would: cut, colour, clarity and carat weight, as recorded on an independent grading report. At Vimora, every diamond is IGI certified — the report states the exact grade on each of the four, plus the growth method, so you're never relying on a seller's word for what you're buying.
How does the price compare to a mined diamond of similar quality?
Meaningfully lower, because the price difference reflects supply, not quality. A mined diamond's price includes the cost and scarcity of extraction; a lab grown diamond of matching cut, colour, clarity and carat is produced without that constraint, which typically puts it well below a comparable mined stone.
What's the difference between a lab grown diamond, moissanite and cubic zirconia?
Only one of the three is actually diamond. Moissanite is a distinct mineral (silicon carbide) with its own optical signature — it throws noticeably more rainbow-coloured fire than a diamond does. Cubic zirconia is a manufactured crystal with no relation to diamond's chemistry at all, softer and less durable. A lab grown diamond shares diamond's exact carbon structure and hardness; the other two are diamond alternatives, not diamonds.
Can a lab grown diamond go in an engagement ring?
Yes — it's now one of the most common choices for exactly that. The hardness and durability that make a diamond suited to daily wear are identical regardless of origin, and IGI certification gives the same long-term reassurance a mined stone's certificate would.
What else can a lab grown diamond be set into, besides engagement rings?
Everything. At Vimora that spans solitaire and statement rings, wedding bands, earrings, necklaces and pendants, bracelets, nose pins, anklets, mangalsutras, and devotional pieces in the Diamond & Divinity line. A lab grown diamond performs the same in every setting — the choice of piece is about occasion and style, not about what the stone can handle.
